Por lo general cuando se habla del Ego, indefectiblemente sale a colación la Humildad – que no es necesariamente su contraparte, depende del color del cristal con que se mire -, en el mundo laboral donde debemos gestionar personas, es importante desarrollar la capacidad (hasta hacerla una habilidad) de lidiar con distintos egos para lograr objetivos. Todo calza perfecto ante ese escenario, pero ¿cómo estamos con la gestión de nuestro propio ego?
Conforme a la Real Academia Española (RAE), Ego es exceso de autoestima, mientras que Humildad es virtud que consiste en el conocimiento de las propias limitaciones y debilidades y en obrar de acuerdo con este conocimiento. Ambas definiciones serán consideradas a lo largo de este Pulso Clave.
Al Ego se le suelen atribuir actitudes y comportamientos negativos como: falta de empatía, arrogancia, desdén y menosprecio hacia personas, ideales, iniciativas, etc. Sin embargo, el Ego bien entendido y con la humildad como lupa, nos ayuda a tomar consciencia de la importancia de ser protagonistas de nuestros espacios, siendo ese el primer paso para el desarrollo y fortalecimiento de la autoestima y autoconfianza.
El desafío es reconocer cuándo el Ego no es sano, un exceso – por mínimo que sea – podría llegar a distorsionar la realidad y generar limitaciones en los distintos ambientes o roles en los que nos desenvolvemos. ¿Qué hoja de ruta podríamos seguir para identificar en qué estadio se encuentra nuestro Ego o el de las personas que forman parte de nuestro equipo de trabajo? El Ego desmedido en las organizaciones suele darse de una manera más notable en posiciones de Liderazgo, propiciando consecuencias negativas. Un gran ejemplo de ello tenemos con una famosa marca… Apple.
Andy Grignon – desarrollador que formó parte de la creación del iPhone original -, mencionó en una ocasión que era muy complicado trabajar en el proyecto. Apple congregó a los más calificados profesionales de distintas áreas para ensamblar el equipo, algo que creyó necesario como primera instancia. Posteriormente, Apple se dio cuenta que esa iniciativa generó una lucha de Egos por lo que el trabajo se tornó simplemente en una horrible pesadilla. Es así como Steve Jobs desarrolló los 3 métodos para resolver situaciones enrevesadas, que hasta la fecha siguen vigentes. 1. Alejar la vista. 2. Enfocarse. 3. Desconectar.
El Ego en su dosis justa junto con la humildad, ha demostrado tener un gran efecto sobre el bienestar y resultados en las organizaciones. Prueba de ello tenemos a Indra Nooyi, CEO de PepsiCo hasta el 2019, considerada una de las ejecutivas más influyentes del mundo. Antes de encabezar PepsiCo, lideró equipos de trabajos en empresas importantes como: Motorola, The Boston Consulting Group o Johnson & Johnson. Además de impulsar en su momento la fusión con Quaker Oats. Ella comprendió la importancia de gestionar su Ego con Humildad y a través de ello… ayudar en el proceso a las personas de su equipo. Sus resultados respaldan ese esfuerzo.
Necesitamos extraer el néctar positivo del Ego, regarlo con humildad y disfrutar de los frutos de ese esfuerzo en nuestra organización.
